“Rose? Its time to go.” It was her father gently bringing her out of her daily daydreams.

She nodded silently and began the usually method of packing her backpack, the only dear possession of hers. She sometimes felt like a turtle, to have all her home on her back. It was never good to get attached to a place; no matter how long they stayed they would have to always move, nothing was ever permanent. They had stayed near the mountains, and to their luck they had found a dilapidated old mill, barely able to stand but it gave them protection and a place to sleep out from the constant dust of the desert like area.

They traveled with 20 other mortals, one of the largest group that have been together in a while, maybe it wasn’t such a good idea, but there was such comfort in it. They were their own little community. Rose dropped her bag as screams echoed behind her, before the bag hit the ground there were gunshots.

She ran outside and her eyes widened as she took in the devastation, everything seemed to slow down, like seconds were hours. It was the military that had found them. Someone grabbed her and pulled her into the shadows, she didn’t realize she wasn’t breathing for those few seconds. Her parents reached for her, pulling her from the cold water she felt herself drowning in, struggling in. The screams never ended as her father and mother hugged her tightly.

“How..how did they find us!?” Rose asked her voice trembling with anger…fear.

“Someone sold us out Rose….you have to go.” Her mother said hurriedly.

“But it’s still light out how can they walk around with the sun still out!?” She said ignoring the last part of the sentence; though knowing very well what was said.

It was her father that answered this time, “Look at what they are wearing,”

She looked, the military was dressed in all black, the remainder of the setting sun shined on them, but they didn’t burn, their skin did not turn black as it should when tissue was dead and left out in the sun..because there was no skin showing.

“It’s some sort of suit that they have developed. We have heard from sources that they were developing UV safe armor,…mortals might not have a place to wander in the daytime anymore.”

He was silent for a moment looking on at the children that they were capturing, the children that would never age…he suddenly grabbed her shoulders tightly, “Rose we won’t say it again. You have to go. Here is a coded pass that our source made for us, take it to the Boundary, Terminal 3; the code is only safe for one pass. As soon as you swipe, run because it will only be a matter of minutes before the system kicks in and realizes it’s a fake.” A gunshot closer to them pulled the embraced family apart, “Kemar is waiting for you by the Boundary. He will help you! We will distract them, go!”

“NO! I wont leave you, come with me!! Please!” She cried out. Her mother pushed her away “Go! Now!!” She screamed at her, and frightened she obliged, she walked backwards slowly and then turned and ran, tears streaming down her face.

“Rose!!” Her father called out from behind, she turned, “Trust Blue! She will help you!”

She nodded and just then a dark red spot on her father’s shirt blossomed like a flower, stunned he simply stared at his wife and daughter, he found peace with it all at that moment, realizing just how lucky he was to even have a family in this time of undeclared war, and to have them for well over twenty three years…yes it indeed was a blessing…His beloved Allium clung to him as his feet gave way..

Rose watched as her father died..quietly slipped away, her eyes blurry with tears, she stumbled, almost falling…her mouth opened with endless screams of horror.

“RUN ROSE! RUN!” She could hear her mother screaming. She turned and began running.

She didn’t look back as she heard more gunshots and screams..a scream she knew she never would forget as it belonged to her gentle mother, she just ran. It was only a minute of complete distraught and confusion before she collected herself and formulated the plan of escape in her head. She grabbed the motorcycle she was running towards and hopped on, the ignition roared to life as she sped away. She silently thanked Byron for leaving his bike there and for not using up the last of his gas.

Behind her the ground was scattered with dead bodies, it was only about half of the group that was taken alive in chains and handcuffs. Rose still had hot tears burning the back of her eyes but she did not allow them to fall. She didn’t know who Kemar was or what he even looked like, but she knew where to meet him.

  4. Noooooo! That was so sad : (. Rose is all on her own and now that that the government has those suits, how can she possibly be safe?? Great job with the pics (I can’t say it enough). I could really feel the emotion and peril the characters are experiencing. I hope Rose can remain strong. Excellent chapter!! : D

  10. What a riveting, riveting start! With the detailed kind of writing you’ve shown in the prologue and this chapter, you hardly need pictures. But they are awesome too.

    Now on to Rose, I can’t imagine for the life of me how I’d function if I had to watch my father die in front of me, and my mom being taken away. She is such a brave girl, and she shouldn’t let her father’s death be in vain, for him she should keep breathing and moving forward. I loved this line in the prologue “She wouldn’t mind running away so much from the darkness if she had someone running with her into the light.” I really, really hope she finds a person to run with. And Kemar sounds interesting. I can’t wait to meet him.

    • Thats actually one of my favorite lines so far too. :}
      Its so horribly sad, with just a tinge of hope mixed with it.

      Thank you for reading <33 Much appreciation!

  11. Gaah! Poor Rose 😦 Things were hard enough, but seems like everything just got worse. Her parents were the only thing that kept her going, and now, without them, I don’t know how she’ll do it. Can’t wait for her to meet up with Kemar and go through all these secretive plans!

  12. Wow, you did an amazing job with the scenes!! The set, the state everyone was in, it’s like watching a movie. Very viviid and dynamic.

    Poor Rose, having to lose her family like that. But if she wants to survive, she can’t stay there, and it was good that she left when she was able to.

    December 19, 2011 at 1:49 am

  13. Auburn: Rose indeed loses alot in this first chapter. :[ But, theres a ray of hope hmm?

    Tommie: Thank you very much! It was fun and frustrating to do with so many characters. XD

  14. Whoa! Talk about action-packed! The beginning was emotionally driven and fantastically written! You did a great job pulling in all the heat of the moment actions surrounding poor Rose! That was short but wow! Edge of my seat! I hope she finds Kemar and gets the help she needs! Your scenes are gorgeous I love the shots they added a great deal to the story though the impact of your writing speaks for itself! Those poor kids though 😦 I wonder who sold them out and why if they knew what would happen to this group!

    • Thanks for the wonderful comment!! Im glad that the story grabbed your attention and left you with questions. :}

  15. Poor Rose! She’s so brave though. To be able to run off like that into the danger, and be able to accept the fact that she no longer will have her parents to protect her. I just hope this Kemar and Blue will be able to help her. Is there really even an escape to all this..?

    August 14, 2012 at 6:18 pm

    • Thanks for reading Cin! Rose is definitely brave. I don’t know who wouldnt fall apart in a moment like that, but then the adrenaline is what is keeping her going. Im not sure if she has come to the terms of what the reality is….it will hit her hard though when it does.
